Our Business
Scottish Power is part of the Iberdrola Group, one of the world’s largest integrated utility companies and a world leader in wind energy. We’re proud to say we produce 100% green electricity and are well on our way on our ultimate journey to Net Zero.
Within SP Energy Networks our focus is on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. Our team is building a dynamic network to meet the changing demands for electricity and increasingly, renewable electricity – safely, securely, and sustainably in the communities we serve.
We need talented, hardworking, and flexible people to join us and deliver a better future, quicker.
What do we offer?
Our fast track programme builds on your existing skills from other industries combining technical, academic and on the job training. Bringing learning and earning together, not only will you study towards a Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB) qualification, giving you a Certificate and Diploma in Site Management (CDDSM) qualification, you’ll earn a competitive salary, develop new skills and gain invaluable knowledge and experience as you go.
For candidates without practical experience who have recently achieved their qualification, your coaching and mentoring programme will give you exposure to a variety of engineering streams, generating the skills and experience you need to become an effective Construction Site Manager.
You’ll start on a salary of £31,238 per annum and on completion of your programme, you’ll move into a Site Manager role with a starting salary of £36,648 per annum. You’ll also enjoy a range of additional benefits such as access to a stakeholder pension scheme, a generous holiday entitlement, subsidised gym facilities and a range of employee discounts.
What will you be doing?
As the licensed Transmission Owner (TO) for the Central Belt and Southern Scotland, we’re working hard to support a green economic recovery from Covid-19 and boldly accelerate the transition to Net Zero. We’re delivering a variety of exciting projects to take electricity generated from power stations, windfarms and various other utilities, and transport it through our transmission network. Within SP Transmission (SPT), you’ll excel at co-ordinating and monitoring our contractors’ on-site activities on major projects, collaborating to serve over 2 million consumers connected via our distribution network. During this programme, you’ll be developed by top, experienced Site Managers and Construction Managers, providing you with the skills you need, not just for this job, but to develop your career within SP Energy Networks.
On successful completion of this programme, you will thrive at providing technical knowledge and support during the construction stage, playing a vital role in developing and implementing a wide range of activities with different departments across the company, and leading on-site ownership of commercial administration of contracts. Our transmission network comprises over 4,300 kilometres of circuits and 156 substations, and we need bright new talent keen to challenge our current processes and bring the electricity transmission to the next level.
You’ll find information on all our current and future projects on our web page: SP Energy Networks.
Who are we looking for?
We’re looking for highly motivated individuals eager to learn new skills and take their careers to the next level. You’ll be enrolled on a CIOB development programme for supervisors or less-experienced managers. Through successful completion of the development course, you will attain a CIOB Certificate and Diploma in Site Management (CDDSM) qualification. The training will be carried out through distance learning and evaluated coursework.
There are two different pathways depending on your experience and background.
Candidates with practical experience:
This programme will combine formal training and on-the job training and you’ll be supported to build your experience and responsibility. This programme would be great for you if you have experience in the Construction and Utilities sector at a supervisory level and have worked on construction projects. You’ll have the ability to demonstrate this practical technical knowledge in your discipline and will have used this to lead a team or package of works. And of course, you’ll need excellent IT skills and will be confident using packages such as Microsoft Office suite.
Qualified candidates without practical experience
This programme would be great for you if you have already attained an electrical, civil, construction management or similar degree. And of course, you’ll need excellent IT skills and will be confident using packages such as Microsoft Office suite. You’ll be excited to start a career working in a construction and major project environment but perhaps haven’t had the opportunity to gain significant hands-on experience on site. We’ll rectify that and get you involved straight away! With job shadowing, practical coaching and mentoring from qualified and experienced site managers and construction managers you’ll be on the fast track to success.
The target duration of the programme will be up to two years; however, this could be shortened depending on your ability and existing qualifications.
We need people who are ambitious with a desire to learn, who embrace new ideas and challenge others to think differently. Above all, you must share our passion for excellence and be able to deliver results and impress our customers so that we can all be proud of where we work. If this sounds like you, jump start your career now - with a global business making a real difference to the way we generate and use energy.
These opportunities are site based at various project locations throughout the Scottish regions of SP Energy Networks (Edinburgh, Dumfries and Galloway, Lothians, Ayrshire, Borders, Glasgow, Central, Fife, Lanarkshire). Due to the nature of the role it is crucial that you hold a full UK driving license as you will have to travel frequently to different project locations.
What should you do next?
We want to hear from you if you have an electrical, civil, construction management (or similar) degree or relevant experience and are interested in working in a construction and major project environment.
