Where you’ll be working

Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. What you’ll be doing

We’re looking for Cable Jointers, Overhead Linespersons and Electrical Fitters to work across our network, details of each trade are listed below: 

Cable jointing - will see successful candidates work primarily on the electrical underground cable network, installing and maintaining connections over a range of voltages to ensure that the electricity supply meets customer needs, and the network maintains our high standards. This role would involve connecting cables to the system as well as finding faults and repairing problems which may have developed through age or damage.   

Overhead Linesperson – As an overhead linesperson you would be responsible for installing and repairing overhead lines to maintain power transmission, distribution and to ensure our customers electricity supply is available 24/7. You be a team player who enjoys working outdoors in a physical role. You will need to be comfortable working at heights, often in a rural environment. 

Fitting – As a Fitter you will be working on equipment within substations over a range of voltages. This work is varied and includes carrying out preventative and reactive maintenance following faults and decommissioning of old equipment and commissioning of new equipment. You will be working on a diverse range of equipment including switchgear, transformers and auxiliary control and protection equipment all of which can vary from old mechanical, analogue equipment to new digital electronic equipment. Working as part of a small team across a range of locations, you’ll ensure that our electricity network meets our high standards by producing quality work, sometimes at heights or in confined spaces. 

Blending academic and technical skills tuition with work-based learning, this programme will provide training on a variety of assets, from the latest technology to traditional kit, providing you with a varied and interesting career.  

Health and Safety is our number one priority; from day one you’ll be taught the fundamentals enabling you to keep yourself and your colleagues safe. You’ll be introduced to your chosen trade, all within the safety of our first-class training centres in Cumbernauld and Hoylake. During your training, you’ll develop your technical knowledge and hands-on skills. Within your first year, you’ll be out in your local district being mentored by our experienced Craftspeople.

What you’ll bring

If you live in Scotland, you’ll have or expect to achieve, three National 5s in English, Maths and a STEM-related subject (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) or equivalent qualifications.

If you live in England or Wales, you’ll have or expect to achieve, three GCSEs at grades A-C / 4-9 in English, Maths and a STEM related subject (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) or equivalent qualifications. Alternatively, we’ll consider functional skills at level 2 in English and Maths.
