Where you’ll be working
As a Distribution and Transmission Network Operator, SP Energy Networks keeps the electricity flowing to homes and businesses throughout Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire and North Shropshire. One of only six Distribution Operators and one of four Transmission Operators in the UK, our actions are crucial to the decarbonisation of the network. The energy landscape is changing fast as the way our customers and communities generate, consume and interact with energy evolves. Our role is to decarbonise our network through technology and innovation to support the journey to Net Zero. We need to maximise the efficiency of our network to optimise the transmission and distribution of electricity generated from renewables, reducing electricity losses and allowing us to move away from fossil fuels. With great power comes great responsibility – but we’re up for the challenge!
With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation and consumer behaviour.
You’ll find more information about SP Energy Networks, including details of our current projects, on our website.
What you’ll be doing
As a Civil Engineering Graduate Apprentice, you will be exposed to a wide range of civil assets, including structures, drainage, foundations, buildings, bridges and tunnels of varying ages and conditions. This will provide you with valuable experience in all stages of asset management and construction cycles, allowing you to build a successful career within the various areas of the SP Energy Networks business.
You will have a wide range of responsibilities and tasks that will allow you to gain valuable experience in various aspects of civil engineering. You’ll complete multiple placements in areas of the business that are involved in Civil Engineering activities including Asset Management, Project Development, Engineering Standards, Transmission / 132kV Civil Detailed Design, Construction Management and Project Delivery across both the Distribution and Transmission businesses.
During your placements, you can expect to be doing the following:
Civil Surveying: You will be involved in conducting surveys and assessments of civil assets, such as structures, drainage systems, foundations, buildings, bridges and tunnels. This will involve collecting data, analysing measurements and evaluating the condition and performance of these assets.
Conceptual Design: You will contribute to the early stages of project development by assisting in the creation of conceptual designs for infrastructure projects. This will involve considering factors such as functionality, feasibility, and sustainability and collaborating with architects, designers and other professionals to develop innovative and practical solutions.
Detailed Civil and Structural Design: You will play a crucial role in the detailed design phase of projects where you will use your technical knowledge and skills to create precise and accurate designs for civil and structural elements. This includes creating drawings, specifying materials and ensuring compliance with relevant codes and regulations.
Civil Drawing: You will be responsible for creating and maintaining detailed drawings and plans for civil engineering projects. This includes using computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce accurate and comprehensive drawings that can be used for construction and documentation purposes.
Civil Policy and Investment Strategy: You will contribute to the development of civil policies and investment strategies within the SP Energy Networks business. This involves analysing data, evaluating industry trends and working with stakeholders to develop strategies that optimise asset management, construction and maintenance processes.
Site Engineering Duties: You will have the opportunity to work on-site, overseeing construction projects and ensuring that designs are implemented accurately and safely. This may involve co-ordinating with contractors, conducting inspections and resolving any technical issues that arise during the construction process.
Project Management: You will be involved in project management tasks, such as co-ordinating resources, managing budgets and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within scope. This requires effective communication, organisation and co-ordination skills to ensure successful project outcomes.
Throughout your programme, you will gain exposure to a wide range of network investment projects, spanning from low voltage (LV) to extra high voltage (EHV) across Distribution, Transmission and central core business functions. This will give you a comprehensive understanding of civil engineering in the energy sector and allow you to contribute to the development of critical infrastructure projects.
What’s in it for you
Our 4-year programme brings learning and earning together. You will work towards a nationally recognised qualification, develop new skills and gain invaluable knowledge and experience. We are committed to supporting your professional growth and will support you in completing the necessary attributes to work towards a professional chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or equivalent bodies. This recognition and professional qualification will enhance your career prospects and demonstrate your commitment to the profession.
As a Civil Engineer Graduate Apprentice, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits including:
- Starting salary of £20,000
- A generous pension scheme where we’ll double match your contributions up to 10%
- A broad range of flexible benefits including share incentive plans, employee discounts, charity-matched funding and many, many more.
- On completion of your programme, you’ll continue your development and you’ll be ready to become a Graduate Civil Engineer, with a starting salary of £39,240.
What you’ll bring
You’ll have a minimum of four Highers at two Bs and two Cs, including Maths and a Science or Technology subject (or equivalent). This solid foundation in key academic areas will be instrumental in contributing to your success. We can also accept Modern Apprentice SCQF L6 in a relevant discipline, equivalent to two Highers at grade B. You’ll also need a driving licence (or be working towards it) as you’ll need to get to different sites both during and after your training period.
