ScottishPower Pipe Band To Help Schools Across Scotland Celebrate St Andrew's Day

12/09/2012

The ScottishPower Pipe Band is today, Wednesday 12th September, launching its St. Andrew’s Day competition for primary schools across Scotland for the second year running.

The leading Grade 1 Pipe Band is offering schools the opportunity to win one of the world renowned pipers to join in their own St Andrew’s Day celebrations.

To enter, primary school children simply have to do one of the following:

  • Create a piece of artwork to celebrate St Andrew’s Day – this could be a mural or individual drawings
  • Write a story about how the school is celebrating St Andrew’s Day

A number of schools from across the length and breadth of Scotland will be selected for a piper to visit their school as part of their event on or around the 30th November to celebrate the Patron Saint of Scotland.

Ann Loughrey, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at ScottishPower, said: “We are very proud of our Scottish heritage and want to play our part in helping young people across the country celebrate St Andrew’s Day.

“The ScottishPower Pipe Band has played across the world at a number of key events, appearing before Her Majesty The Queen at Braemar, Pope John Paul II at St Peter’s in Rome and performing at the Official Opening of the Scottish Parliament. We hope that young people would enjoy having a piper to perform at their school celebrations.”

The band has achieved considerable success including being Cowal Champions, Scottish Champions, All-Ireland Champions and runners-up in the World Championships.

Pipe Major, Chris Armstrong, said: “More and more young people are keen to learn the pipes and we hope to harness this enthusiasm and help future generations learn this traditional skill.

“We plan to make this St Andrew’s Day very special for a number of Primary School children and look forward to joining in their celebrations.”
