Carrick Academy crowned winners of inaugural rugby championship

05/10/2016

Carrick Rugby club in Ayrshire has been rewarded for winning the 2016 ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championship.

A special trophy presentation was made to Carrick captain Alyana Dalgleish by former Glasgow and Scotland captain Al Kellock and current Warriors squad members Ryan Grant and Simone Favaro.

Carrick’s prize for winning the competition was three sets of strips, one of which they graciously gifted to Shawlands Academy, the team they beat in the final.

Present at the event were representatives from ScottishPower, Glen Tippett, Scottish Rugby’s Youth & School’s manager for Glasgow South and MSP for Carrick Jeane Freeman.

Al Kellock said: “Carrick played really well throughout the championship and are deserved winners. This presentation is a great opportunity to acknowledge that as well as every other team that got involved in the first season and everyone at Glasgow Warriors and ScottishPower is excited to see the competition go from strength to strength this year.”

Glen Tippett Scottish Rugby’s Regional Schools & Youth Manager said: “It’s great to be able to celebrate Carrick’s achievement in the first ever ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championship.

“The first season was a great success and we’re looking forward to the second year being just as exciting.”

Graham Campbell from ScottishPower, said: “We are incredibly proud of our partnership with Glasgow Warriors and the opportunity it brings to encourage and develop sports participation in our schools and communities. Congratulations to Carrick Academy for a well-deserved Championship victory, and to all teams who took part in what was a fantastic inaugural competition this year.

Jeane Freeman MSP for Carrick, Cumnock & Doon Valley added: “I congratulate Carrick Academy on winning this competition and bringing the first ever title to Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley.  Grassroots sport for young people is an important aspect of building a healthier Scotland, and I am delighted that ScottishPower and the Warriors have worked together on developing this.”
