Developing Skills for Life - National Apprenticeship Week 2023

08/02/2023

ScottishPower is on the hunt for 1,000 new recruits this year and that includes scores of apprentices looking to kick start their energy career.

It’s National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2023, the 16th annual celebration of apprenticeships, bringing together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact apprenticeships make on individuals, businesses and communities.

Skilled, talented engineers are vital for the future of the energy and utilities sector and  the last 5 years we’ve recruited over 500 apprentices into the company to help us decarbonise the UK.  And with over £10bn of investment in scores of green projects across the country we need a talent pipeline for the decades ahead.

George Browne and Bailey Woolston, our apprentices on ScottishPower Renewables' East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm, are in the first year of their three-year training programme with the 102-turbine offshore windfarm in Lowestoft and believe their training in a fast-growing global industry will take them far while tackling the climate emergency.

And they're already looking beyond their apprenticeships to long careers with opportunities to take their skills for life to new windfarms worldwide. They are among four apprentices training at the operations and maintenance base of the £2.5bn windfarm off the Suffolk coast that generates enough clean power for more than 600,000 homes.

Our SP Energy Networks business is a huge recruiter of apprentices every year and with major projects to be delivered to help electrify the economy there are huge opportunities to build a career for life.

CEO SP Energy Networks, Vicky Kelsall, says: "Our apprenticeship programmes are a great way to gain qualifications while also learning on the job and getting paid. Apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career and businesses to develop a talented workforce that is equipped with future-ready skills. With a wealth of opportunities available, not just in engineering, our apprenticeships cover Logistics, Craft, Engineering, Project Management, Quantity Surveying, Cyber, Data Science and Real Time Systems. There has never been a more exciting time to begin working in our industry which is core to enabling the UK's transition to a net zero carbon economy."

Our 2023 Apprentice Programmes are now open with a wide variety of roles, across:
