We have visitor centres at several power stations which are very popular. These include Cruachan Power Station near Oban, which is open all year round and welcomes over 60,000 visitors each year.
Visitor centres at the Galloway Hydro-electric scheme and at Longannet Power Station are open to organised groups by appointment only to ensure they get the most from their trip. Longannet Power Station's Visitors' Information Centre has had thousands of people flock to it since it opened in 1998. The Centre explains how electricity is produced - using interactive displays to cover the entire process from coal mining to the transmission of electricity and the disposal of ash. There are also sections on the environment and ScottishPower's renewable energy operations. Visitors to the Centre can also see inside Longannet's massive turbine hall, which is big enough to accommodate an ocean liner.
Cockenzie Power station does not have a visitor centre, but has hosted the 3 Harbours Festival for a number of years and accommodates visits from community groups by appointment.
Our visitor centre at Tongland Power Station – part of the Galloway Hydro-electric Scheme – has a strong focus on safety and environmental issues. Here, children learn about water and electrical safety, along with the history of the scheme, renewable energy and wildlife, such as the lifecycle of a salmon. They even have the opportunity to see the fish ladder and walk across the dam.
Whitelee Visitor Centre sits on the edge of Europe’s largest windfarm, only 20 minutes from central Glasgow. Here, the fascinating visitor centre offers hands-on interactive activities and the chance to find out more about renewable energy. There is also a learning hub, café, shop and over 70 km of trails for cycling, walking and other outdoor activities. There’s something for all age groups.
