Shawlands Academy from Glasgow is through to the finals of the ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championship after their S1 and S2 boys and under-15 girls’ teams rallied against Lenzie Academy to win all of their three matches and move one step closer to winning the tournament.
The school will soon learn their final opponents once the remaining semi-final showdown between Carrick Academy and St Thomas Acquinas takes place in April.
Watching and cheering on each school from the side lines at Cartha Rugby Football Club in Glasgow were Glasgow Warriors stars Jonny Gray, Jason Hill and Glenn Bryce, who had some inspirational words of advice for each player before they stepped on to the field.
Warriors Captain Jonny Gray, said: “We were delighted to cheer on Shawlands Academy and Lenzie Academy and see such great rugby skills on show. Both schools really impressed in the quarter-final stages so it was a semi-final tie we were looking forward to being a part of. We encouraged the schools to enjoy the day and give their all, which every single player did.
“Congratulations to Shawlands Academy, they showed a lot of spirit and deserve their place in the final. We’re looking forward to welcoming them back to Scotstoun at the beginning of May in what should be a fantastic final.”
Robbie Renwick, Shawlands Academy rugby coach, said: “Today was another fantastic day of rugby and Lenzie Academy were worthy opponents. The determination and commitment from both teams was great for all to see. The pupils had a great day getting to meet the likes of Jonny Gray, Jason Hill and Glenn Bryce and this spurred them on. We’re delighted to get to the final and can’t wait to play again at Scotstoun Stadium in May.”
