Government-backed scheme intends to deliver a new era of consumer empowerment.
ScottishPower has become the first UK energy company to launch a solution supporting the government’s MIDATA programme, which allows customers quick and easy access to data about their energy consumption history, helping to ensure that they are on the best deal for their circumstances.
The new web-based platform will not only help customers to check that they are on the best tariff in terms of price, it will also allow them to gain valuable insight into their energy consumption patterns.
ScottishPower, along with other energy companies, agreed to investigate the potential of developing a Midata solution at the Energy Summit with David Cameron in London last October.
Neil Clitheroe, CEO of ScottishPower Retail and Generation, said: “We want to be open and transparent with consumer data, and build greater trust between ScottishPower and our customers. The Midata concept is designed to empower customers when making decisions about their account, and we are pleased to have delivered on the commitment we made to customers at the Energy Summit last year.
“We have worked closely with the UK Government and Consumer Groups when devising our system, and data privacy and security were central to our thinking at all times. For full customer functionality, we hope that switching sites will be in a position to support our solution in the near future.”

Notes to Editors:
- Access to ScottishPower’s Midata system requires an online service with the company, which any customer can request
- Data can be requested via the customer area on www.scottishpower.co.uk
- In the longer term, it is hoped that other energy companies and switching sites launch Midata solutions so further benefits can be experienced by consumers
