Scottish Government Goes Green With New ScottishPower Contract

30/04/2009

  • ScottishPower wins energy contract to supply large Scottish public sector buildings
  • Biggest power supply contract in Scottish history – worth £600 million over a possible four year contract period
  • 100% of power supplied will be attributed to renewable energy projects

ScottishPower has been awarded the biggest power supply contract in Scottish history by Procurement Scotland, and the electricity supplied will be attributed to renewable energy sources.

ScottishPower won three out of the four lots available in Procurement Scotland’s tendering process, including the most significant award - the right to supply large Scottish public sector buildings. Starting in October 2009, this contract will be available for use by all schools, universities, hospitals and prisons together with all large government and local authority buildings.

Willie MacDiarmid, ScottishPower’s Director of Energy Retail, said: “We are delighted to have won the right to supply the vast majority of the public sector’s power requirements in Scotland. The opportunity to supply green energy to our country’s large public buildings, from the Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh Castle to all schools and hospitals, is a major achievement.

“Scotland has the best renewable energy resources in Europe and as we increase the capacity of our green generation it is only right that the Scottish Government should lead the way in supporting a greener future.”

Procurement Scotland’s tendering process started in September last year with six major energy companies taking part in the process. Together, all three contracted lots won by ScottishPower will be worth around £600 million over a possible 4 year term and is the first major utilities tender to be awarded by Procurement Scotland

As part of this award ScottishPower also won the right to power all of Scotland’s street lighting requirements.

ScottishPower Renewables is the UK’s biggest developer and generator of on-shore wind energy and power from their projects will support the three contractual lots.

ScottishPower Renewables is currently completing the construction of Europe’s largest windfarm, Whitelee, near Glasgow. The 140 turbine project will make a major contribution to the Scottish Government contracts.
