Lenzie Academy produced a magnificent performance at Scotstoun stadium in the quarter-final of the ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championship to progress to the semi-final stages of the tournament.

The three Lenzie Academy rugby teams from S1, S2 and an under-15 girls team showed fantastic skill and determination against Grange Academy, All Saints Secondary and Hyndland Secondary to set up a semi-final showdown with Shawlands Academy.

Lenzie S1 boys recorded an impressive victory against All Saints in a close tie that ended 4-1, while the S2 boys defeated Grange Academy 6-3 and All Saints Secondary 6-5. Lenzie’s under-15 girls team also impressed on a sunny afternoon that saw them earn a 7-7 draw in an end to end match against Grange Academy under-15 girls to help their school to the next round.
 

If successful in the semi-finals which will take place in April, Lenzie can challenge for a spot in the finals of the tournament to be played at Scotstoun Stadium, home of the Glasgow Warriors, in May. The champions of the tournament will win new rugby kits for their school, as well as the first ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championships trophy. The school which come second place can also look forward to a coaching session with one member of the Glasgow Warriors squad.

Glasgow Warriors stars Richie Vernon, Ryan Grant, Fergus Scott and Peter Murchie attended the quarter final match at Scotstoun to cheer on the schools and give pupils some inspirational advice as they took to the pitch.

Ryan Grant said, “It was fantastic to be a part of the quarter-finals today and help give the schools a few words of advice before their big matches. The players worked so hard and there were very impressive skill levels on show. I think there’s potential for Lenzie Academy to produce some future stars and they should be really proud of making it through to the next round of the championships.”

Robbie Stewart, Lenzie Academy rugby coach said: “We are really pleased to have qualified for the next round of the tournament today. Today’s competition gave our pupils a fantastic opportunity to play at an emerging level. Not many players that played here today get more than 40 minutes of match time on a Saturday, so it was a chance for them to get more experience of competitive rugby against a talented bunch of players. We’re now looking forward to the semi-finals of the ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championship and enjoying another day of rugby.”
