Iberdrola Receives The Edison Award For Its Management System Of R+D

18/06/2008

The prize, awarded by the prestigious Edison Electric Institute in the United States, is another sign of the vocation of global leadership of the Company in the fields of research, development and innovation

This management system has allowed IBERDROLA to develop projects of high technological value in the fields of renewable energies, the environment and the generation and distribution of electrical energy
IBERDROLA today received the Edison Award for the design and execution of its management system for R+D (Research and Development), created to generate constant improvements in the efficiency of processes and to identify and apply resources according to needs and for the developing external markets.

This prize, which is awarded by the prestigious Edison Electric Institute in the United States and recognises on a yearly basis an electricity company from this country and abroad that has stood out for its innovation and contribution to the sector, represents another sign of the vocation of global leadership of IBERDROLA in the field of R+D.

The management system for which the Company has been recognised has allowed IBERDROLA to use systematic and uniform criteria in numerous activities of technological innovation and development in a global and effective manner, with what has in this way promoted this culture throughout the business.

In addition, thanks to this new methodology, the Company is playing a key role in the development of projects of high technological value in the fields of renewable energies, the environment and the generation and distribution of electrical energy.

In this sense, the Company has developed this management system taking into account the technological and scientific challenges that society faces today, particularly those concerning the dependence on raw energy materials that are running out and the consequences of climate change.

On the other hand, the launch of this method by IBERDROLA responds to the need for continuous improvement in the activity of the Company and is in line with its Strategic Plan 2008-2010, presented by Ignacio Galán in October 2007, and its vision for the future.

Among the main functions of this initiative by the Company, it is worth highlighting the identification of the areas of knowledge, experience and potential of the people who form part of IBERDROLA; the execution and maintenance of a system of technological surveillance; the measurement and analysis of the results of the activities of R+D and the Company’s copyright protection.

IBERDROLA - committed to Innovation
In addition, the electricity company, in order to remain at the forefront of technology, plans to invest €225 million in R+D during the next three years, according to its Strategic Plan 2008-2010. This figure will be set aside, fundamentally, for consolidating the focus of IBERDROLA on sustainable development and the promotion of renewable energies and emerging technologies.

Specifically, the Company has planned to set aside €140 million for the areas of renewable energies and deregulated business (€70 million for each, 31% of the total amount, respectively), grid affairs will receive €50 million (22%) and the rest of the total amount, €35 million (16%), will end up in other areas, such as information technologies.
